Former Ohio Division I Player of the Year has two years of eligibility remaining
TOLEDO, Ohio – Head Coach Tod Kowalczyk announced on Wednesday that Sean Jones (Columbus, Ohio) will transfer to the University of Toledo to join the Rockets' men's basketball program next season. Jones has two years of eligibility remaining after being a member of Marquette's basketball program for the last four years.
A 5-foot-10, 185-pound guard, Jones averaged 6.3 ppg and 3.9 apg in eight contests for the Golden Eagles this past season before being sidelined due to foot and shoulder injuries. He scored a career-high 15 points with a career-best three triples in 13 minutes as sophomore vs. Creighton. Jones also tallied 11 points against UConn and Georgia Tech as a freshman.
"I think Sean is one of best point guards in the transfer portal market," Kowalczyk said. "He's as athletic a player as you'll see and he wants to be a college coach. Sean's also a great leader who brings an unbelievable amount of defensive toughness to the game. He has the experience of playing against some of the best players in college basketball at Marquette for a tremendous coach in Shaka Smart. Sean will be an immediate impact player for us."
Jones earned 2021-22 Ohio Division I Player of the Year honors during his prep career after averaging 20.0 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 3.7 apg and 2.1 spg in his senior season at Gahanna Lincoln High School. A three-time team captain, he led the team to a 71-8 overall record in three seasons as well as back-to-back district titles and two trips to the regional final as a junior and senior. Jones scored a school-record 1,655 points and was a three-time first team all-state honoree.
