Senior Janice Monakana is Toledo's Female Athlete of the Week after averaging a team-high 23.5 points and 5.5 rebounds last week. Monakana shot an efficient 47.4 percent (9-of-19) from the field, including an impressive 55.6 percent (5-of-9) from three-point range, and a flashy 85.7 percent (24-of-28) from the charity stripe in 32.0 minutes in the two contests.
One of two Rockets to score in double figures in both games, Monakana opened the week with a career-high 29 points and six boards in 31 minutes vs. reigning MAC Tournament champion Buffalo on Wednesday and in the process became the 26th player in program history to reach the 1,000-career point plateau. The London, England native did a majority of her damage at the free throw line, shooting a career-tying best 14-of-15 to post at least 20 points for the eighth time in her collegiate career. The 2015-16 honorable mention All-MAC honoree followed up that performance against the UB with a team-high 18 points and five caroms in 33 minutes at two-time reigning MAC regular-season champion Ohio on Saturday.
Monakana and the Rockets are back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 8 with a trip to Kalamazoo, MI to face Western Michigan. Tip-off time is set for 7:00 p.m.
