Tommy Winterstein was hired as an assistant coach for Toledo baseball program on August 13, 2019. He will serve as the Rockets' pitching coach. Winterstein most recently served as a volunteer assistant coach at Western Kentucky.
Winterstein spent three seasons at WKU as the program's volunteer assistant coach and camp director. As a Hilltopper, he assisted the coaching staff, primarily working with pitchers and catchers, while also coordinating alumni relations, community service initiatives, camps and clinics.
Prior to his stint at WKU, Winterstein served as the director of player development at his alma mater, Charleston Southern University, a member of the Big South Conference. At Charleston Southern, he worked mainly with hitters and infielders; provided video analysis to the coaching staff and hitters; served as High School Prospect Camp Director; assisted with recruits while they were on campus; assisted with annual golf tournament fundraiser as well as other program fundraising projects; participated in student-athlete success sessions, and oversaw game-day field preparations.
Winterstein began his collegiate career at Furman before transferring to the University of South Carolina-Lancaster. There he recorded an ERA of 2.18 across 10 appearances and hit .398 with 23 RBIs. Winterstein then transferred to Charleston Southern, where he earned his bachelor's degree in business administration.
