Matt Phipps

Matt Phipps enters completed his first year as an assistant coach for the Toledo's baseball program in 2024.

In his first season at Toledo, Phipps worked with catcher Brayden White, who threw out 22-of-61 (36.1%) of base-stealers, the most runners caught stealing of any catcher in the league. Phipps also assisted with Toledo’s offense which hit the second-most home runs (89) and drew the most walks (273) in program history.

"I couldn't be happier to announce that Matt Phipps has joined our staff," Reinstetle said. "I've known Matt for years after recruiting and coaching him when I was at Western Kentucky. Matt was one of those players you just knew would make a great coach one day. He brings great baseball knowledge to us and has a lot of passion and energy for this profession. He hits on all the things we needed in this position."

A Dublin, Ohio native, Phipps was a catcher for two years at Allen Community College (2017-18) and three at Western Kentucky (2019-21). In his senior year with the Hilltoppers, he started 40 games and was a Buster Posey Award Watch List member for a second time. He led WKU with a .368 hitting mark and tied for second on the team with 21 hits, nine walks, and six doubles in the Covid-shortened 2020 season. In 2019, Phipps started 49 games and ranked fifth on the team with a .275 batting average en route to collecting 32 RBIs.

Phipps will coach Toledo's catchers and assist with hitting, base-running, and recruiting. He will also coordinate the Rocket Baseball Camps.
