Toledo will face Kent State in elimination game tomorrow to advance to tournament championship game
Â
Toledo will move into the elimination bracket and face No. 2 seed Kent State on Saturday at 11:00 a.m., with the two sides looking to claim the final spot in the championship game. The Rockets and Golden Flashes will meet for the second time in the tournament. Toledo took an 8-0 victory over KSU on Thursday.
Â
The game started out as a pitcher's duel, with the Huskies holding a 1-0 lead through five. NIU then scored a pair of two-out runs in the sixth for a 3-0 lead before scoring six times in the seventh to break open to a 9-0 margin and put the game out of reach.
Â
Freshman starter Hayden Frey pitched 5.2 innings with three runs allowed on eight hits. He struck out three and stranded eight baserunners to keep Toledo in the game.
Â
Offensively, junior Cade Baker tallied a multi-hit game, his 23rd of the season. Junior Charlie Scholvin added a two-run home run and junior Cole Cahill had an RBI.
Â
Quoting Head Coach Rob Reinstetle
"Obviously not what we wanted or expected out of the game today. It was a close 1-0 game through five innings before they put a few good swings on it and opened it up on us. The grand slam was a dagger. Tough loss, but we've been here before. We get to play Kent again tomorrow with the winner advancing to the championship game. We'll regroup and be ready to go."
