Nathan Leininger strikes out eight in seven innings in final start at Scott Park
TOLEDO, Ohio – In a battle of top-four MAC teams, the Toledo baseball team fell in a one-run affair at Scott Park, as an eighth-inning run made the difference in a 4-3 defeat to Kent State in the series opener on Thursday.
Â
After an early home run gave Kent State a 2-0 lead, the Rockets (28-26, 20-11 MAC) rallied back to tie the game, 3-3 in the fourth. The game evolved into a pitcher's duel from there, staying a 3-3 deadlock until the eighth, when the Golden Flashes (39-12, 23-8 MAC) pushed across the winning score.
Â
The Rockets got a three-hit bid from freshman Liam Arsich, who scored two runs on the afternoon. Redshirt junior Troy Sudbrook added a two-run double, his 32nd two-bagger of the season. Sudbrook has a double in four of his last five games. Junior Charlie Scholvin also added a pair of hits.
Â
In his final start at Scott Park, senior Nathan Leininger delivered another strong outing, allowing just three runs on seven hits and striking out eight batters. He retired 10 of the last 11 hitters he faced, striking out five in that span. Nate Langbehn allowed just one unearned run and struck out a pair in relief.
Â
The Rockets and Golden Flashes will continue the weekend set on Friday, May 15 at 3:00 p.m. Streaming will be on BCSN and ESPN+.

Quoting Head Coach Rob Reinstetle
"The score is completely indicative of the type of game that was - two of the best teams in the conference going toe-to-toe in an important game. When you play a good baseball team, your opportunities to win the game will be very limited and you must capitalize. We had a few of those opportunities and did not capitalize like we typically do. In his last outing at Scott Park, I thought Nate Leininger battled all day and kept us in the game. Kent State jumped on him early and he settled in and held them in-check for the next six innings that he pitched. At this point in the season it's pretty simple, you have to flush it. Get off the mat and come back ready to play tomorrow."
