Frey threw eight shutout innings and allowed just one hit to win 3-1 pitchers’ duel on Saturday
TOLEDO, Ohio – Left-handed pitcher Hayden Frey earned the Mid-American Conference's Co-Pitcher of the Week honor after a stellar start led to a Battle of I-75 victory against Bowling Green, the conference office announced on Monday.
In Saturday's start against Bowling Green, Frey tossed 8.0 innings, allowing no runs and one hit, and struck out eight batters to one walk. Frey retired the first 10 batters of the game and took a no-hitter into the sixth inning. He did not allow a runner into scoring position the entire afternoon.
The 8.0 innings tied the longest outing for a Rocket starter this season, matching Nathan Leininger's outing at Central Michigan on March 20. Frey's eight strikeouts were his second-most this season.
The effort led to a 3-1 victory in a pitchers' duel, which evened the Battle of I-75 series with the Falcons. Toledo would go on to take the weekend set with a 6-4 victory on Sunday.
Frey, a freshman, earned the first MAC pitching honor of his career. His performance was also mentioned in D1Baseball's top pitching performances from Saturday.
For the season, Frey holds a 4-2 record, a 3.46 ERA and a .229 opponent batting average. He has 45 strikeouts to 19 walks in 54.1 innings pitched.
