More than 100 student-athletes, coaches and staff help clean up downtown parks along the Maumee River
TOLEDO, Ohio – More than 100 student-athletes, coaches and staff from the University of Toledo Athletic Department helped with clean-up efforts along the Maumee River in downtown Toledo on Friday, April 17 as part of the Rockets' weekend celebration of 419 Day.
Toledo Athletics partnered with Metroparks Toledo and UTMC to help beautify the Glass City Metropark, as well as work on improvements at the LeBoutillier Memorial Boathouse in International Park. Â
"419 Day is a great reminder of how proud we are to call Toledo home," said Brian Lutz, Toledo's interim vice president and director of athletics. "Our coaches, staff and student-athletes take real pride in giving back to the community that supports us every day. Partnering with Metroparks Toledo and UTMC to help care for the Maumee River and our downtown parks is a meaningful way for Rocket Athletics to make a positive impact beyond competition."
419 Day takes its name from the area code 419 that is commonly used in the Toledo area. In recent years, it has been marked as an unofficial holiday in the Toledo area on April 19 to celebrate and support our community.Â
This is the fourth year that the Rockets have celebrated 419 Day with community projects. In the past three years, Toledo Athletics volunteered its services on numerous community projects, including cleaning up city parks and other public areas, and partnering with groups like the Art Tatum Zone and Habitat for Humanity on renovation projects.
