Head Coach Chris Bailey-Greene pleased with progress of his young squad
TOLEDO, Ohio – The University of Toledo women's rowing program will compete in its first-ever spring competition at the Lubbers Cup in Grand Rapids, Mich. on Saturday.
Toledo, in its inaugural season of rowing, has a young team led by Head Coach Chris Bailey-Greene. Bailey-Greene said his goal at this point to acclimate his team to races that are shorter and faster than what they experienced last fall.
"90 percent of our team are walk-ons, so we're still trying to teach them how to do sprint races versus head races, which are a little bit longer," said Bailey-Greene, who came to Toledo after 15 seasons as an assistant with stops at Washington State, Gonzaga, Oregon State and Yale. "In the spring you go 2000 meters instead of about 4-to-5000 meters. It's a very different level of racing, being side by side, seeing boats around you and seeing who's actually winning and losing."
Bailey-Greene added that although unusually cold weather has limited his squad's time on the water this semester, he is pleased with their progress.
"For those who are committed, put in the work, showed up and got through winter season, they've gotten drastically faster," said Bailey-Greene. "They learned a lot more. Their technique has gotten better. And I would say they're all hungrier now. I think the team is more tight-knit now. Everybody's really bought into what we're doing.
"Our goal is to learn something at every single race, getting to the end of the spring and feeling drastically more experienced than we did at the beginning."
After this weekend, the Rockets' spring campaign includes the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta in Oak Ridge, Tenn. on April 18-19, as well as regattas at Eastern Michigan on April 25 and at Duquesne on May 2. Toledo will also compete for an automatic berth into the NCAA Championships at the Mid-American Conference Championships in Ypsilanti, Mich. on May 16.
