KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Toledo women's basketball team jumped ahead with a first-half sprint and Kendall Carruthers took over the game with 25 points as the Rockets' closed their road slate in a 56-49 victory over Western Michigan at University Arena on Wednesday.
Â
Toledo (15-13, 9-8 MAC) led 25-6 just six minutes into the contest. The Broncos (9-19, 5-12 MAC) came all the way back and closed within one point five separate times in the second half. However, the Rockets stood firm, extending the lead and then finishing off the game with nine free throws in the final minute. Carruthers scored 20 of Toledo's 31 second half points.
Â
Toledo took advantage of a 14-4 edge at the free throw line, and held the Broncos to 38.2% (21-of-55) from the field. The Rockets also out-rebounded the Broncos, 34-31 and held near-even in turnovers, 15-14.
Â
The victory, coupled with losses by Kent State and Bowling Green puts Toledo in sixth place in the Mid-American Conference standings, with one regular-season game to play.
Â
Quoting Head Coach Ginny Boggess
"Really proud of our effort for a full 40, even when we had that dry spell on offense. Defense travels and we needed that tonight. I challenged them to win the rebounding battle and we executed that. We were able to avoid fouling and kept them off the free throw line. Western Michigan has lots of motion in their offense and we did a great job communicating on the defensive end. Excited to get some ice cream, go home and get some rest."

- The Rockets swept the series against Western Michigan, having also won 59-46 at home on Jan. 10.
- Toledo's 14 points allowed in the first half was its best defensive half of the season. The six points allowed in the first quarter tied a season best.
