Patricia Anumgba scores 24 points on Senior Day; Rockets finish regular season as No. 6 seed in MAC Tournament
TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo women's basketball team battled hard but was unable to overcome a double-digit deficit in a 78-71 defeat that closed out the regular season in front of a crowd of 5,139 fans at Savage Arena on Saturday.
Toledo will enter next week's Mid-American Conference Tournament as the No. 6 seed. Toledo will face No. 3 seed UMass in the quarterfinal round on Wednesday.
After a tight first quarter, the Rockets (15-14, 9-9 MAC) fell behind, 35-26 at the half following a 12-0 run from the Cardinals (25-6, 16-2 MAC). Ball State led by as much as 19 in the fourth quarter, but senior Patricia Anumgba keyed a late rally which brought Toledo within single digits in the final minutes, part of her 22 second-half points. However, the Rockets could not come closer than seven points down the stretch.
Ball State took advantage of a 50-38 rebounding edge, even as Toledo won the turnover battle, 17-13. The Cardinals out-shot Toledo 47.0%-34.8% on the afternoon.
UT honored its lone senior before the game, Silver Spring, Md. native Patricia Anumgba, who started all 29 games in her one season as a Rocket.
Quoting Head Coach Ginny Boggess
"Really fun to see the support for Patricia tonight. I'm sorry we couldn't come away with a win. It's not lost on me that we're shorthanded without two starters and limits for Miriam (Diala), but I'm still going to prepare every night, and I think we had every chance in the world today. I was incredibly proud of our fight but we ran up against a very good team. Ball State is a big team with positional size and more depth than what they had last year. A hard fought battle – I think it will always be hard-fought between those two teams. We'll start getting to work right now and get ready to make a push in the MAC Tournament."
