Wilson named Second-Team All-MAC and Blyden earns Third-Team All-MAC and unanimous Freshman of the Year honors
TOLEDO, Ohio – Junior Sonny Wilson and freshman Leroy Blyden Jr. were named to the Mid-American Conference's all-league squads, with Blyden being a unanimous selection for MAC Freshman of the Year honors and earning a spot on the MAC All-Freshman Team in Wednesday morning's announcement of the all-league teams and specialty awards by the league office. Voting was done by the league's head coaches.
A Pontiac, Mich. native, Wilson received Second-Team All-MAC honors after being named to the third team last season. Wilson's selection marks the 15th consecutive season a Rocket has been selected to the first or second team under Head Coach Tod Kowalczyk. Blyden, who was named Third-Team All-MAC, is the ninth Rocket ever to be named as MAC Freshman of the Year, and the fourth honoree in Kowalczyk's 16-year tenure.
Wilson leads the Rockets with career-high totals of 17.4 ppg, 4.5 apg and 1.4 spg. He also ranks second in the MAC with a team-best 3.0 assist/turnover ratio. He has scored in double digits in 47 of his last 48 contests. Wilson ranks second on the team with ten 20-point outings, including a career-high 29 points at Michigan State (Dec. 16).
Blyden leads MAC freshmen with 16.2 ppg and has registered the most points (502) by a freshman in program history. He ranks in the MAC's Top 10 with an 85.5 FT% (3rd), 1.7 spg (4th), 4.5 apg (7th) and 16.2 ppg (9th). Blyden opened league play with a 36-point outing vs. Western Michigan (Dec. 30), the most by a Rocket freshman in 25 years. He then capped off the conference campaign with a 20-point, season-high 13-assist, seven-rebound outing vs. Buffalo (March 6). His 13 assists vs. the Bulls were one shy of a school record and the most by a Rocket in 44 years.
The Rockets open the 2026 MAC Tournament with a quarterfinal matchup vs. No. 5 seed Bowling Green. Tipoff from Rocket Arena in Downtown Cleveland will be at approximately 1:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
