Freshman Leroy Blyden Jr. tallies 17 of his game-high 24 points in second half
HARRISONBURG, Va. – Freshman Leroy Blyden Jr. and junior Sonny Wilson combined for 44 points, but it wasn't enough for the Toledo men's basketball team in its 73-71 defeat at James Madison (12-13) in the MAC-Sun Belt Challenge at the Atlantic Union Bank Center.
Blyden topped the Rockets (12-12) with 24 points (17 in the second half) and nearly put UT ahead with an attempt that missed in the waning seconds. He previously gave Toledo a 71-70 advantage with 34.4 seconds remaining before JMU hit a pair of free throws with 20 seconds left to regain the lead.
Wilson added 20 points for the Rockets, while Austin Parks contributed 11 points on 5-of-5 shooting.
Cliff Davis topped the Dukes offensively with 18 points.
The evenly-played contest was tied 32-32 at the half and featured nine lead changes and 10 occasions when the score was tied.
QUOTING HEAD COACH TOD KOWALCZYK
"It was an unbelievable game in a great atmosphere. I obviously would have liked for us to make that last shot, but there were a ton of positives tonight. The two things that ended up hurting in the end was our first-half free-throw shooting (2-of-6) and some turnovers early in the second half. Our guys played their tails off against a good team that's been struggling a bit."
