TOLEDO, Ohio - Head Men's Golf Coach Jeff Roope announced on Thursday that Solomon Petrie (Akron, Ohio) is transferring to the University of Toledo after playing the last two years at the University of Kentucky. Petrie will have two years of eligibility remaining.
Â
"We're thrilled that Solomon has chosen to come back to the state of Ohio after being a standout at Archbishop Hoban in Akron," Roope said. "He had a highly decorated junior golf career, and we certainly did our best to recruit him in high school when he was ranked among the top players in the nation. It will be great to have him join our program along with incoming freshman Braden Herstich, who also attended Akron Hoban. We're really looking forward to the experience and leadership he can provide as well as the contributions he will make on and off the course."
Â
Petrie redshirted in his freshman year at Kentucky and competed in nine tournaments over the last two seasons. He finished this past season with a 75.3 stroke average, including a career-best two-under par 69 at the Windon Memorial Classic. Petrie also notched his best collegiate showing by tying for 20th place at the Cullan Brown Collegiate. In 2023-24, he posted a 74.4 mark with a season-low one-under par 70 at the SEC Match Play event in Birmingham, Ala.
Â
Prior to his time in Lexington, Petrie was ranked as the 33rd overall player in the American Junior Golf Association rankings, a 2021 AJGA Rolex Junior All-America selection, and won the 2017 Teen World Championship with an eight-under par 208 (69-67-72) at Pinehurst. He also posted three top-three finishes in AJGA events and was a two-time First-Team All-Ohio selection.
Â
At the high school level, Petrie set Archbishop Hoban's school record for season average (71.00) and fired a school-record eight-under par 62 at the Portage Country Club in the Hoban Invitational. He also carded a sectional record of six-under par (65) and was a 17-time high school medalist, including seven victories during his senior season.
