Senior Jamie Butler and freshman Bence Bertenyi tied for fourth place at two-under par
GROVE CITY, Ohio – Freshman Bence Bertenyi and senior Jamie Butler each fired two-under par 70s to lead Toledo in Sunday's opening round of the Mid-American Conference Men's Golf Championships. The duo's play at the par-72, 7,462-yard Pinnacle Golf Club helped Toledo to a fourth-place standing following the first 18 holes of the 54-hole tournament.
Bertenyi recovered from a rough start that saw him bogey his first three holes. He followed up with birdies on three of his next four holes to make the turn at even-par. Bertenyi then registered three birdies and a bogey on the back nine.
Butler played the front nine at four-under and was tied for first place at five-under before posting a bogey on the par-four No. 12 and No. 13 holes.
Freshman Julius Lange is tied for 13th place at one-over par, while senior CJ van Wyk is tied for 28th place (76) and junior Mads Jensen is tied for 41st place (79).
Bertenyi and Butler are tied for the tournament lead with six birdies, with Lange tied for fourth with five birdies.
The Rockets are just four shots behind first-round leaders Eastern Michigan and Northern Illinois in the team standings. The Eagles' James Baxter sits atop the individual leaderboard with a five-under par 67.
Toledo's tee times in tomorrow's second round will begin at 9:00 a.m.
