Toledo Drops Tight Match to Miami, 4-3

Freshman Jacklynka Scholten moves to 9-0 in singles play

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo women's tennis team fell in a closely contested match, 4-3, to Miami on Sunday at Twos Athletic Club. The loss marked the end of a 16-home match winning streak for the Rockets that began in Jan. 2023. During that stretch, Toledo recorded 10 regular season wins over Mid-American Conference opponents with the last one coming on April 18, 2024 with a 6-1 win over Buffalo.

Gaby Rondon and Audrey Moutama combined for a 7-6 (7-4) win on the No. 2 doubles court, but it was not enough as Miami (2-9, 1-0 MAC) clinched the doubles point after taking wins on the No. 1 and No. 3 courts.

Toledo (7-4, 0-1 MAC) tied the match in singles play, 1-1, behind a straight-set victory from Catherine Rhegness on the No. 6 court. Audrey Moutama then fell on the No. 1 court in straight sets to put Miami back in front, 2-1.

Freshman Jacklynka Scholten earned a 6-4, 6-4 victory on the No. 2 court to move to 9-0 in singles play. Jone Ibanez followed up with a straight set win of her own on the No. 4 court to put the Rockets in front, 3-2.

The RedHawks grabbed a 6-3, 6-4 win on the No. 3 court to tie the match, 3-3. Miami then clinched match point with a tiebreaker win on the No. 4 court.

QUOTING COACH MAUNTLER
"The Miami squad is the same team we played in the MAC final last year. They have a lot of seniors and they played better in the big moments today. Credit to them. You have to fail and learn from it to get better. There was a lot of good experience gained today, and I expect my young team to get after it this week at practice. JJ (Jacklynka) has been sick for a week but she always shows up to compete and give 100%. Cat has been a force at No. 6 for us, and you would never know she was playing in her first MAC match today. Jone showed up with great energy. She was a great leader on the court."
