TOLEDO, Ohio – Longtime Toledo Athletics head team physician Dr. Roger Kruse was honored Friday as the University of Toledo officially dedicated the Athletic Training Room in Savage Arena as the Dr. Roger J. Kruse Center for Sports Medicine.
A Toledo area native, Dr. Kruse has been a cornerstone of Rocket Athletics since he was hired as a team physician in 1981 before becoming head team physician in 1989. He is responsible for overseeing and leading the medical care given to Rocket athletes across the 17 varsity sports. His impact on the university community extends far beyond the training room, touching the lives of countless student-athletes, coaches, and staff with his expertise, compassion, and advocacy for sports medicine excellence.
"For the past 36 years, Roger has been an incredible asset to Toledo Athletics, our University and our community ," said Vice President and Director of Athletics Bryan B. Blair. "He has the reputation as one of the very best team physicians in the country, and deservedly so. Naming the Savage Athletic Training Room in his honor is a fitting tribute to a man who has given so much to the University of Toledo and to our student-athletes."
"Honoring Dr. Roger Kruse is deeply meaningful to me—not only because of his extraordinary contributions to Rocket Athletics, but because he has been a trusted friend and mentor for nearly three decades," said Senior Associate Athletics Director for Health and Wellness Brian Jones. "Dedicating the Savage Athletic Training Room as the Dr. Roger J. Kruse Center for Sports Medicine is a fitting tribute to his legacy of excellence, compassion, and innovation. I couldn't be more proud to celebrate this well-deserved recognition with him and his family."
Dr. Kruse boasts an extensive sports medicine resume outside of the University of Toledo as well. He has worked as the Medical Director for the ProMedica Sports Institute since 1993, helping injured athletes return to their sports as safely and as soon as possible. Previously, Dr. Kruse served on the NCAA Committee for Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports from 2014-2018, while simultaneously holding the role of the NCAA Chairman of Drug Testing.
Dr. Kruse has been a prominent international figure in the world of Olympic figure skating. He has worked with the United States figure skating team since 1992 as a team physician and member of the Sports Medicine and Sports Science Committee. He has served as a Team USA physician for three Olympic games (Norway in 1994, Atlanta in 1996 and Nagano in 1998). In the 1998 Olympics, he was chosen to be Team USA's head team physician.
