Toledo Opens 2025 Dual Season at No. 3 Ohio State

Rockets and Buckeyes meet at 4:00 p.m. in Columbus
TOLEDO, Ohio – Toledo men's tennis begins the 2025 dual season with a trip to Columbus, Ohio to face No. 3-ranked Ohio State on Saturday. The match is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. at the Ty Tucker Tennis Center.
ABOUT THE ROCKETS
Toledo made history in 2023-24, winning the Mid-American Conference Championship and earning an NCAA Tournament berth for the second consecutive season. Head Coach Al Wermer earned 2024 MAC Coach of the Year honors while Pawit Sornlaksup was named the 2024 MAC Player of the Year.
The Rockets return five players from last year's championship squad, including senior Hanamichi Carvajal, junior Matias Olivero and sophomores Cole Cozens, Poonthong Komolpisut and Charlie Snow. Carvajal earned All-MAC Second Team honors in 2024 after helping Toledo win the conference championship last season and tallying a season-high five straight match wins.
The squad welcomes three newcomers into the fold with transfers Lucas Britez and Joshua Mackey, who joined the Rockets in the fall, and Eli Wiblin, who enrolled in January.
FALL SEASON RECAP
The Rockets had a packed fall schedule in which Carvajal, Cozens, Komolpisut and Mackey saw great success in their first competitions of the season. The team posted a 65-37 overall record through five tournaments and Cozens brought home a flight tile at the MAC Indoors Tournament in Kalamazoo, Mich. (Oct. 24-27). Komolpisut, Carvajal and Charlie Snow competed in the M25 ITF World Tour in October, representing their home countries and competing against top competition.
ABOUT OHIO STATE
The Buckeyes posted an overall record of 34-2 in the 2023-24 season, winning the Big Ten Tournament and falling to TCU in the NCAA Semifinals. Ohio State earned the No. 3 ranking in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) preseason rankings while four players have earned a singles ranking, led by sophomore Aidan Kim at No. 11 in the country.
UP NEXT
Toledo will host its first home matches of the season on Jan. 25-26. The Rockets will take on IU Indy on Saturday, Jan. 25 and Butler on Sunday, Jan. 26. Both matches will begin at 1:00 p.m. at Shadow Valley Tennis Club.
