2021 MAC Player of the Year took second consecutive championship in Double-A
TOLEDO, Ohio – Toledo baseball alumnus Chris Meyers won the Eastern League Championship and became a two-time professional champion after the Erie Seawolves captured their second consecutive league crown this week.
Â
Erie, the Double-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, earned their crown after defeating Somerset 3-2 in Game 2 of the championship series, winning the series 2-0. They advanced to the championship series after defeating Akron 2-1 in the Southwest Division championship.
Â
Meyers hit .256 with 18 home runs, 58 RBIs and a .772 OPS in 122 regular-season games in 2024. He also had a 1.000 fielding percentage in 97 games in the field, playing most of his games at first base and left field. He added two home runs and five RBIs in 21 postseason at bats, and delivered a 2-for-4 effort with an RBI single in Tuesday's clincher.
Â
Playing the outfield, Meyers made some highlight-reel defensive plays during the postseason, including a diving catch which turned into a double play to finish Game 3 of the Southwest Division Championship.
Â
Meyers was a 13th-round draft pick by the Tigers in 2021 and is one of four Rockets drafted to MLB organizations under Head Coach Rob Reinstetle. He was called up to Erie from single-A Western Michigan in 2023.
Â
The Miamisburg, Ohio native had many accolades during his time as a Rocket, including the 2021 Mid-American Conference Player of the Year, a Third-Team All-America selection by Collegiate Baseball and ABCA/Rawlings and as the MAC Medal of Excellence recipient as a senior. He also became the league's first Triple Crown winner since 1998.
