Lucas Britez and Joshua Mackey to Join Men’s Tennis Program Next Season

Head Coach Al Wermer announces first additions to 2024-25 roster

TOLEDO, Ohio – Toledo men's tennis Head Coach Al Wermer announced the addition of junior transfers Lucas Britez and Joshua Mackey for the upcoming season. Britez comes to Toledo from East Tennessee State University and Mackey comes from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Each have two years of athletic eligibility remaining

Lucas Britez
Hometown/ Previous
School: Asunción, Paraguay/ East Tennessee State

Britez helped ETSU capture the 2024 SoCon Tournament Championship title, the 13th in program history. Individually, Britez went unbeaten in his last five matches, all from the No. 6 court, including an unfinished match in ETSU's 4-0 loss to No. 7 Tennessee in the first round of the 2024 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Tournament.

Britez is one of three collegiate tennis players in his family. His sister Leyla plays at Tennessee, and his brother Bruno plays for Weatherford College in Texas.

Joshua Mackey
Hometown/ Previous School:
Dublin, Ireland/ University of Missouri-St.Louis

Mackey led UMSL in singles play for the last two seasons, including a 12-6 dual record mostly from the No. 4 court last season. He scored one team point for the Tritons against No. 20 McKendree and No. 7 UIndy and forced a third set but went unfinished in the GLVC Championship Tournament against No. 24 Drury. In doubles play, Mackey went 11-9 in head-to-head matches mostly from the No. 2 court. Prior to his time with the Tritons, Mackey played No.1 in Ireland tennis U18 with a national championship and runner-up in the senior national championship in doubles competition.
