FULLERTON, Calif. – The Toledo softball team ended the CSF/ LBSU Tournament with a 3-2 (8 inn.) loss to Utah State in Fullerton, Calif. on Saturday. The Rockets (9-10) finished with a 3-2 record in the weekend tournament.
After a scoreless seven innings of play, junior
Eli Enriquez hit an RBI single and
Lexi Eckman stole home to give Toledo a 2-0 lead in the top of the eighth.
Junior
Kylee Graham (2-4) had a two-hit shutout going into the eighth but gave up three unearned runs on four hits in the bottom frame for the loss. Utah State tied the game off a two-run double and win it when Grace Matej doubled to left field to score the game-winning run.
For the weekend, senior
Riley Mohr connected on a team-high nine hits and three RBIs. Junior
Kendra VanderLugt recorded six hits with four doubles, one triple, one home run, and nine RBIs. Junior
Sidney Griffith also had six hits on the weekend, while Enriquez was 4-for-5 in stolen base attempts. Enriquez now has 17 stolen bases this season, tying her No.10 all-time with Lindsey Tobias's 17 stolen bases in 2012. The program record is 44 stolen bases in a season by Leigh Ross in 1991.
Toledo will begin Mid-American Conference play next weekend with a three-game series at Akron on Friday-Saturday, March 15-16.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Utah State got one hit in the bottom of the first but left the runner stranded at second base.
- Kendra VanderLugt hit a two-out double in the second inning but was stranded on second.
- The Aggies drew a walk in the sixth and advanced to third off back-to-back fielder's choices but never reached home.
- Utah State left two runners stranded in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings.
- Eli Enriquez hit an RBI single to break the deadlock and Lexi Eckman stole home base to give UT a 2-0 lead in the eighth.
- Utah State tied the game with a two-run double in the eighth, and Grace Mtej walked off with an RBI double to end the game 3-2.
