Rockets Explode in Sweep Over Yale and Princeton

Junior Kendra VanderLugt ties school record with seven RBIs in 12-2 win over Princeton

FULLERTON, Calif. – The Toledo softball team had an explosive showing at the plate, connecting on a season-high 14 hits in a pair of wins over Yale 8-5 and Princeton 12-2 (6 inn.) to sweep Day 2 of the CSF/ LBSU Tournament in Fullerton, Calif. on Friday.

In the opener, Yale and Toledo traded leads in the first two innings until the Rockets scored four runs in the fourth to take a 6-4 lead and never looked back. Junior Maris Barbato's homer and Sidney Griffith's RBI single provided two insurance runs to make it 8-4 in the fifth, and the Bulldogs could not close the gap to end the game in an 8-5 decision. Sophia Knight (7-4) pitched 5.0 innings in relief and allowed only one run in the win.

In Game 2, the Rocket scored five runs on four hits in the third to establish a 5-0 lead. Junior Kendra VanderLugt ripped a triple to right center to extend UT's lead to 8-2 in the fifth. Toledo drove in another four runs to make it 12-2 in the sixth and that would be enough to end the game and earn the doubleheader sweep. Junior Kylee Graham (2-3) allowed three hits to pick up the victory.

For the day, senior Riley Mohr and Griffith recorded five hits apiece, while VanderLugt contributed three doubles and a triple, and senior Madison Mikulski was 2-for-2 in stolen base attempts. VanderLugt had seven RBIs vs. Princeton to tie Lacey LeVier for the Toledo single-game record (seven RBIs vs. Dayton in 2008). Senior Jenna Kroll added two more RBIs on Friday to bring her career total to 93 which ranks No.7 in UT history, one behind No.6 Erica Singler (2005-08) with 94.

Toledo (9-9) will close out the CSF/ LBSU Tournament on Saturday vs. Utah State at 6:30 p.m. at Anderson Field.
