Senior Sloane Teske and junior Audrey Moutama claim victories over the Spartans
EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Toledo women's tennis team put Michigan State to the test, but could not overcome the Spartans in a 5-2 loss in East Lansing on Friday night.
"We play a tough non-conference schedule for a reason," head coach Tracy Mauntler said. "I want to push the team early on so that we can feel pressure and be able to execute under it. We had some great singles performances, but not across the board. We will get better from this match."
After MSU took the doubles point, senior Sloane Teske won a quick two-setter from the No. 4 court to tie the match at 1-1. However, MSU won three straight courts to clinch the match. The teams played out the final two courts. Both junior Audrey Moutama and senior Cassie Alcala lost their first sets and won the second sets to force super tiebreakers from their respective courts. Moutama won her final set 10-5 from the No. 6 court for UT's only other victory of the evening. The Spartans ended the match with an 11-9 final on the top court to end the match. Moutama's victory is her third-straight of the season, and a season high for the Rockets' transfer.
"It was so good to have Sloane back in the lineup," Mauntler added. "This was her first singles match since last April. She showed what a competitor she really is."
In doubles play, Toledo's Julia Kuszynski and Sanjana Tallamraju were leading 6-5 at the No. 1 court when Michigan State claimed the bottom two courts to take a 1-0 lead into singles play.
Toledo (3-2) will head to Morgantown, W. Va. next weekend to play West Virginia on Friday, Feb. 16, and William & Mary on Saturday, Feb. 17.
