SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Toledo men's tennis team ended the weekend with a 4-0 loss at Notre Dame on Sunday night.
"It was a tremendous team effort today, the closest 4-0 loss I can remember," head coach Al Wermer said. "We were way up on two courts and coming back on another court. We just ran out of time."
The Fighting Irish won the No. 2 and No. 5 courts to put themselves at match point. Senior Adam Kovac lost his first set to Jean-Mark Malkowski and fought off two match points before falling 7-5 in the second set on the No. 4 court, clinching the match for Notre Dame.
No.91 ranked Pawit Sornlaksup took the court with No. 70 Sebastian Dominko on the No. 1 court, winning the first set in a tight 7-6 set. Sornlaksup was leading 5-1 in the second set before the match was called. Junior Hanamichi Carvajal had just forced a third set at the No. 3 court when the match was ruled incomplete. Freshman Poonthong Komolpisut won his first set at the bottom court and led 3-0 into the second set before the match was called.
Notre Dame took the doubles point after winning the top two courts.
After playing three matches in three days, Wermer was content with his team's performance and is optimistic about the remainder of the season. "Overall, this weekend was really helpful in us addressing and improving some crucial areas that will pay dividends this spring," said Wermer.
Toledo (5-6) will close out its non-conference schedule at Florida Gulf Coast on Thursday, Feb. 29 at 3:00 p.m. in Fort Myers, Fla.
