Rockets just 11 shots behind co-leaders Bowling Green and Central Michigan on a jam-packed leaderboard
ATHENS, Ala. – Junior Barend Botha carded a one-over par 73 on Sunday to lead the Toledo men's golf team in the opening round of the 2023 Mid-American Conference Championships. The Rockets shot a team score of 14-over par 302 in blustery conditions at the par-72, 7,237-yard Canebrake Golf Club and are in ninth place but just 11 shots behind co-leaders Bowling Green and Central Michigan on a jam-packed leaderboard.
Botha is tied for ninth place individually, four shots behind the Chippewas' Jeffrey Andrus, who is in first place with a three-under par 69. Botha was tied for second at one-under par before bogeying two of the last three holes of his round.
Senior Palmer Yenrick is one stroke behind Botha and tied for 16th place with a two-over par 74. Senior NJ Botha is tied for 30th place with a four-over par 76.
Rounding out the Rockets' lineup are junior Jamie Tofte Nielsen (42nd/79) and sophomore Jamie Butler (45th/83)
The Chippewas' Jeffrey Andrus leads all individuals with a three-under par 69, two strokes in front of his nearest competitor.
Toledo's first tee time for tomorrow's Round 2 will be at 9:00 a.m. ET.  Live coverage will begin at 12:30 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
