Rockets Heading to Alabama for MAC Championships

Three-day event will begin on Sunday
TOLEDO, Ohio - The Toledo men's golf team will head to Athens, Ala. this weekend to compete in the 2023 Mid-American Conference Championships. The Rockets will be one of nine schools competing for the opportunity to play in the 2023 NCAA Regionals.
The three-day event will be held on Sunday-Tuesday, April 30-May 2 at the par-72, 7,237-yard Canebrake Club. Eighteen holes will be played each day with tee times beginning at 8:00 a.m. CT for all three rounds.

Junior Barend Botha leads the Rockets with a 70.5 scoring mark, a figure that ranks first in program history ahead of Varsity T Hall of Famer Brad Heaven's 71.6 average in the 2003-04 campaign.

Senior Palmer Yenrick ranks second at 73.4 and is followed by senior NJ Botha (73.5) and junior Jamie Tofte Nielsen (73.7).

Toledo finished four shots behind Kent State in last year's MAC Championships. Nielsen finished in a three-way tie for medalist honors with Kent State's Josh Gilkison (72-72-73) and Miami's Jack Ebner (73-72-72) but lost in a playoff on the second hole. Barend Botha and former Rocket Lukas Clark made the all-tournament team as well by tying for fifth place at six-over par 222.
THE FIELD
• Nine schools are participating in the MAC Championships.
• Kent State has won the last six MAC Championships and has won a conference-best 28 tourney titles. The Golden Flashes are ranked No. 65 in Golfstat's national rankings followed by Toledo (102), Northern Illinois (128), Ball State (134), Miami (142), Bowling Green (188), Eastern Michigan (216), Ohio (255), and Central Michigan (265).

• A live stream for Round 1 will be available on mac-sports.com and on ESPN+ for Round 2 and Round 3. The broadcast coverage will focus on Hole Nos. 16, 17 and 18.

ROCKETS AT THE MAC CHAMPIONSHIPS
• The Rockets have won three league crowns in school history in 1964, 2002 and 2004.
• Toledo also has posted runner-up finishes at the MAC Championships on 11 occasions (1963, 1966, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2013, 2015 and 2022).
• Duncan McNeill became the fifth Rocket ever to capture MAC medalist honors in 2019. He joined Ciaran McAleavey (2008), Brad Heaven (2004), Mike Stone (1992) and Tim Hirt (1979, 1980, 1981). Tim Rice tied for first place in 1997, and junior Jamie Tofte Nielsen finished in a three-way tie for first last year.
