Alex Bauer leads pack with 21st-place finish in 3000m steeplechase
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Toledo women's track & field team traveled to Philadelphia for the opening day of the Penn Relays on Thursday. Four distance runners represented the Rockets in Pennsylvania, while three members of the men's cross country team also competed at the meet.
Lou Trois opened the competition for the Rockets with a 24th-place finish in the 1500m. The junior crossed the finish line in 4:24.91, falling just 0.01 short of her season-best time set at the Bryan Clay Invitational two weeks ago.
Sophomore Alex Bauer and freshman Lianna Surtz made their season debuts in the 3000m steeplechase. Bauer placed 21st with a time of 10:47.47 while Surtz crossed the finish line in 24th, clocking a time of 10:55.33.
Joy Chirchir was the lone Rocket to compete in the women's 5000m, posting a time of 16:40.67.
Three members of the Toledo men's cross country team competed in the men's 5000m to wrap up the evening. Sophomore Dennis Mutai earned a third-place finish, crossing the finish line at 13:49.61. Senior Jake Rethman clocked a time of 14:24.95 to finish 39th, and junior Benjamin Otis placed 57th with a time of 14:39.63.
Competition for the Rockets will continue on Friday at the Ashland Alumni Open with field events scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.
