Toledo Drops 12-11 Slugfest at Eastern Michigan

Garret Pike tallies career-best five RBIs

YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Toledo baseball team wrapped up its series at Eastern Michigan on Sunday, falling to the Eagles by a score of 12-11.

The Rockets (18-21, 8-10 MAC) hit two home runs on Sunday to bring their total to 67 for the season, which is a new single-season school record. UT entered the game with 65 home runs on the year, which was tied for most in a year in school history with the 2002 squad. Sophomore Owen Jackson's homer in the top of the fourth inning was the record-breaking blast.

Toledo appeared to be in control near the end of the game after a four-run top of the ninth put the score at 11-6. Eastern Michigan (17-21, 7-14 MAC) had other ideas however, and scored six runs in the bottom of the ninth to stun the Rockets and come away with a 12-11 win.

"That was a heartbreaking loss today," head coach Rob Reinstetle said. "We battled and battled all day at the plate, so many guys came through for us on offense. We scored 11 runs today; when that happens you have to win the game. But we didn't pitch well at all in the beginning or end of the game. In the end that is what got us. We didn't make enough quality pitches in big spots. As tough of a loss as that is to swallow, we have to turn the page and bounce back. We also can look at the positives. We won the series on the road and our offense averaged 10-plus runs a game this weekend. We're back at it on Tuesday with a full week of baseball ahead of us."

Sophomore Garret Pike had a career day on Sunday, going 4-for-5 with a home run and career-high five RBIs. Jackson drove in three runs and went 2-for-4 on the day, while junior Jeron Williams was 3-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored. Sophomore Caden Konczak capped a solid weekend with a 3-for-3 performance, walking once and scoring twice.

Five pitchers saw time on the bump on Sunday. Junior Camryn Szynski got the starting nod, his first of the season

Following its lengthy road trip, Toledo will return home to Scott Park next week. UT visits Dayton on Tuesday before hosting Bowling Green in a non-conference contest on Wednesday afternoon. The Rockets welcome Western Michigan for a three-game series next weekend.

How it Happened
  • EMU's Josh Kross opened the scoring with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first.
  • Eastern Michigan extended its lead with a run in the second and two more in the third, putting the Rockets in a 5-0 hole.
  • Owen Jackson's record-setting home run in the top of the fourth was a three-run blast that made it a two-run ballgame.
  • Fittingly, another home run gave Toledo its first lead of the game in the top of the fifth. Caden Konczak led off the inning with a single up the middle and three batters later Jeron Williams reached on a base hit to put two runners on with two outs. Pike then drove a 1-1 pitch down the right field line for the go-ahead homer to make it 6-5.
  • The Rockets and Eagles both scored a run in the seventh inning, keeping UT's lead at one run and putting the score at 7-6.
  • Toledo scored four runs in the top of the ninth, two coming on a Brian Fry base hit, to make it 11-6.
  • Eastern Michigan put together a six-run bottom of the ninth to come all the way back and win, 12-11, stunning the Rockets with a walk-off grand slam.
