Toledo Drops Series Opener at Samford, 5-3

Owen Jackson hits 12th home run in Friday’s loss

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Toledo baseball team opened its weekend at Samford with a 5-3 loss on Friday night.

The Rockets (15-18) grabbed an early lead but saw their lead slip away after the Bulldogs (19-15) tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. A two-run bottom of the seventh put Samford ahead, 5-3, which would hold as the final score. UT was held scoreless in the final six innings despite putting runners on base in the closing stages of the game.

"That was a good baseball game," head coach Rob Reinstetle said. "We came out and put some runs on the board early which was great to see. Their starter was a real Friday night ace and he settled into the flow of the game and we just couldn't get much going after that. We had a few opportunities to add some runs but just couldn't get that elusive, big two-out hit. I thought Noah Johnson pitched a solid game. He cruised for four innings and their offense had no chance. That one inning got away from him command-wise and they took full advantage. Tomorrow is a new day and another opportunity to put it all together and play some good baseball."

Toledo's home run leader, sophomore Owen Jackson, left the yard again on Friday with his 12th home run of the season. Junior Trey Wright tallied two hits, the lone Rocket with a multi-hit effort.

Junior Noah Johnson made the start and struck out six in 4.2 innings. Sophomore Brennan McCune, junior Kyle Pijaszek, senior Cal McAninch, and junior Kyle Music saw time out of the bullpen in the series opener.

The Rockets and Bulldogs will resume their series on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. ET. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.

How it Happened
  • Owen Jackson swung at the first pitch he saw in Friday's game and lifted it over the right field wall for a solo homer to give Toledo a 1-0 lead.
  • The Rockets extended their lead to 3-0 in the top of the third. Scott Mackiewicz scored on a wild pitch and Jeron Williams scored on a sac fly to increase the lead.
  • Samford tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth. A two-run homer by Aaron Walton made it a 3-2 ballgame, and Stephen Klein's two-out RBI single tied the game at 3-3.
  • After the first two batters of the inning struck out, Toledo loaded the bases in the top of the seventh but couldn't bring in the go-ahead run.
  • The Bulldogs took their first lead of the night with a two-run seventh inning. The go-ahead run scored on an infield single to put the score at 4-3, and another RBI single brough in another run.
  • The Rockets weren't able to string together any hits in the eighth or ninth innings and ended up dropping the series opener to the Bulldogs.
