Toledo defeats 2022 MAC Champions, snapping Ball State’s 11-match winning streak on Sunday afternoon
TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo women's tennis team defeated reigning MAC Champions Ball State on Sunday afternoon in a 5-2 decision at the UT Varsity Tennis Courts.
No. 69 Toledo (12-3, 3-0 MAC) lost to Ball State in the finals of the 2022 MAC Championships, but got its revenge on Sunday. The Rockets' fourth-straight win snapped the Cardinals' 11-match winning streak and handed the Cardinals their first conference loss this season.
"My players have been working so hard since last May when we lost to Ball State in the MAC Championships," head coach Tracy Mauntler said. "It's been so rewarding to watch these student-athletes learn and grow together every step of the way. The leadership we have at the top of the lineup is second to none. Sloane really set the tone taking care of business quickly, and Cassie and Shalini just followed suit. Our team controlled this match right out of the gate and never looked back."
Sloane Teske got thing done quickly in two sets at the No. 2 court to give Toledo a 2-0 match lead. Shalini Tallamraju followed with a win from the No. 3 court, and Cassie Alcala clinched match point from the No. 1 court, handing BSU's Mariya Polishchuck her first loss.
Sanjana Tallamraju kept the two-set win trend alive from the No. 5 court to push the Rockets ahead 5-0 in the match. Ball State won the final two courts to finish the match in a 5-2 decision.
In doubles play, Teske and Mariona Perez defended the No. 1 court for the sixth-straight time. Julia Kuszynski and Sanjana Tallamraju clinched the doubles team point for Toledo from the No. 2 court.
