Toledo Falls at Ohio State, 6-4

Rockets host Akron this weekend in first home games of 2023

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Toledo baseball team visited Ohio State on Wednesday night and ended up on the losing end of a 6-4 decision at Bill Davis Stadium.

The Rockets led 4-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh, but the Buckeyes led off their half of the inning with back-to-back home runs to take a 5-4 lead. OSU added a run in the eighth to make it 6-4, and despite a late rally in the top of the ninth Toledo was not able to complete the comeback.

Junior Jeron Williams went 3-for-6 with a pair of doubles to extend his hitting streak to 27 games. The Archbold, Ohio native has hit safely in all 19 games this season after ending last year on an eight-game hitting streak.

Sophomore Owen Jackson also had a productive night at the plate, slugging his ninth home run of the year and becoming the first Rocket to draw four walks in a game since 2019. Sophomores Garret Pike, Brian Fry, and Brayden White all recorded multi-hit efforts as well.

Four different pitchers saw time on the mound on Wednesday. Freshman RJ Shunck made the start and pitched two innings, and junior Kyle Pijaszek struck out two in 3.2 frames out of the bullpen.

Toledo will play at home this weekend for the first time this season when it hosts Akron for a three-game series. Friday's opener begins at 3:00 p.m. at Scott Park.

How it Happened
  • Toledo took advantage of three free bases supplied by Ohio State pitchers in the top of the first to score the first run of the game. Following a base hit by Garret Pike, Owen Jackson walked and Brayden White was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Caden Konczak drew a free pass to bring home a run.
  • Pike's sac fly in the top of the second made it a 2-0 ballgame in favor of the Rockets.
  • Ohio State's Hank Thomas and Josh McAlister led off the bottom of the second inning with back-to-back home runs to tie the game at 2-2.
  • Jackson put Toledo back on top with a two-run homer in the top of the sixth to put the score at 4-2.
  • Matthew Graveline scampered home for the Buckeyes on a double steal in the bottom of the sixth to make it 4-3.
  • Ohio State took the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh, again hitting back-to-back homers to make it 5-4. This time it was Kade Kern and Tyler Pettorini slugging consecutive home runs.
  • The Buckeyes extended their lead to 6-4 in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single.
  • The Rockets put two runners in scoring position in the top of the ninth after Scott Mackiewicz drew a one-out walk and advanced to third on a double by Jeron Williams, but both were left stranded.
