DAYTON, Ohio – The Toledo baseball team suffered a 6-2 setback at Wright State on Wednesday afternoon.
The Rockets struck first with a run in the top of the first inning to take an early lead, but that would be their only lead of the game. The Raiders answered with a run in the bottom half of the first and took the lead for good in the third. Toledo added a late run to its total in the eighth inning, but couldn't get much going on offense against the two-time defending Horizon League champs.
"That was a very disappointing loss today," head coach Rob Reinstetle said. "As good as we played all last week, we simply couldn't carry over that excitement and drive for excellence in this game. As bad I feel like we played today, we did have multiple chances to put a few good innings together and put ourselves in a position to win. When you play good teams, all the little things matter even more, and a few mistakes here and there cost us today. I still like where we are at as a group overall. We have a big challenge ahead of us this weekend at Ball State, but it's also a great opportunity to get back on track and play good baseball."
Senior Mason Sykes went 2-for-4 at the plate with a home run, the third time in the last four games he has left the yard. He drove in the only runs of the day for UT, and junior Scott Mackiewicz provided the only other extra-base hit, a pinch-hit double.
Five different pitchers saw time on the mound for Toledo. Freshman RJ Shunck made the start and struck out four in three innings, and juniors Kyle Music and Kyle Pijaszek both pitched scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
The Rockets and Cardinals begin their three-game series in Muncie on Friday afternoon.
