TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo men's tennis team remains an undefeated at home following a tight 4-3 victory over 2022 NCAA Division II national runner up Wayne State on Thursday at Shadow Valley Tennis Club. The victory was the third straight for the Rockets (4-2), who are 3-0 at home this season. Wayne State (2-1) suffered its first defeat of the season.
"This was a hard-fought battle against a team that could quite likely win the D-II National Championships," head coach
Al Wermer said. "Our guys buckled up their helmets after we lost the doubles point."
Wayne State, 2022 GLIAC Champions, captured the doubles team point with a 6-0 victory from the top court and a 6-2 win from the No. 3 court.
Adam Kovac and
Matias Olivero were tied 4-4 on the middle court when the match was ruled unfinished.
Kovac tied the match 1-1 with a two-set victory from the No. 4 court.
Krzysztof Wetoszka put the Rockets ahead in the match with another two-set decision from the No. 2 court.
Pawit Sornlaksup defended the top court with a two-set victory, tallying his 26th-straight singles win. The Warriors captured the No. 5 court in a tough 7-5, 7-5 final to get within one point to the Rockets.Â
Luis Kleinschnitz clinched the match for Toledo after a three-set decision from the No. 6 court. Kleinschnitz pulled out a 6-4 win in the first set after initially trailing 3-0, lost the second set. 6-3, but won the decisive third set, 6-2. Wayne State ended the match with a final three-set victory from the No. 3 court but left on the losing end of a 4-3 final score.Â
Toledo will next head two hours down I-75 for a match at Dayton. The Rockets and Flyers will go head-to-head at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday in the South Regency Tennis Center.
