TOLEDO, Ohio - Sophomore
Janne Slegers won three individual freestyle events and swam the lead leg of the winning 200 freestyle relay to lead the Toledo women's swimming & diving team to a 158.5-141.5 victory over Bowling Green in the aquatic version of the Battle of I-75 at the University of Toledo Student Recreation Center Pool on Saturday.
Toledo won 11 events in what was a close meet from start to finish. A pair of 1-2 finishes in the 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly were a big key to the victory. The Rockets needed victories in the final two races of the day, from senior
Lauren Kilgore in the 200 IM and from the 200 freestyle relay team, to seal the victory over their rivals.Â
"I am so proud of the support system this team has for each other," said Head Coach
Brie Globig. "We saw a lot of strong performances today, from our swimmers and our divers. Through a total team effort we were able to come away with a win!"
Slegers took first place in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle races, then led the Rockets to victory in the final event of the meet, the 200 freestyle relay. She swam the lead leg and gave the Rockets a half-second lead, a margin that held up as the Rockets' time of 1:36.33 was enough to edge the Falcons by .14 of a second.Â
"Janne had a phenomenal meet," said Globig. "She is incredibly coachable, a great teammate and dedicated to swimming her best every time she enters the pool."
Other Rockets who finished first in their races were senior
Jovana Duric (500 and 1000 freestyle), and freshmen
Leah Gentry-Tuney (100 breaststroke) and
Leah Evans (100 butterfly). Senior diver
Madison Giglio captured first place on the three-meter board.
Up next for Toledo is a trip to Cleveland at the Magnus Cup Invitational Nov. 16-18.
