Toledo sweeps Terriers, heads to Indiana to face the Hoosiers tomorrow
TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo men's tennis team came away with a 7-0 sweep over Boston University at Shadow Valley Saturday afternoon to mark the first win of the 2023 season and 300th career win for head coach Al Wermer.
"All of the credit goes to our Rocket players over the years. For me, it was 300 times I didn't mess up enough to cost us" joked Wermer about reaching the career milestone.
Boston University's duo of Adrian Pawlowski and Johann Sajonz got the momentum going for the visitors with the first match win of the afternoon from the No 2 doubles court. Rockets' No. 1 doubles team of Pawit Sornlaksup and Krzysztof Wetoszka kept their team in running for the team point with a win to tie it at 1-1. Marko Galic and Vlad Meluta secured the doubles team win in a hard-fought 7-5 decision from the No. 3 court and carry a 1-0 match lead into singles play.
The Rockets ran away with the match winning on all seven singles courts. Sornlaksup, Kovac, Wetoszka, Galic and Luis Kleinschnitz all won their respective matches in two sets. Jankovic fought to force a tiebreaker after dropping his first set to Ben Letzer, and won his match in a nail-biter 10-6 final score.
"This was a nice start for us, knocking the rust off after the break," Wermer said. "The guys had a good positive mindset. I was especially impressed with our fight during the doubles and a couple of the tight matches."
Toledo will be back at in action Sunday afternoon against Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind. First serve between the Rockets and Hoosiers is set for 4:00 p.m. at the IU Tennis Center.
