ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Toledo women's volleyball team (4-2) ended its weekend with a three-set sweep of Morehead State on Saturday at the Michigan Invitational.
After dropping a pair of matches to two tough opponents on Friday, the Rockets bounced back to sweep the Eagles in dominant fashion. UT hit .418 on Saturday and held Morehead State to a .167 attack percentage.
"Overall I feel like our team found some learning moments," head coach
Jason Oliver said. "It was good to see us perform better against a good Morehead State team and not make those same mistakes the second day. We are looking for those challenging moments so we can grow as a team."
Junior
Jada Bouyer was outstanding, tallying a match-high 11 kills while hitting .786 and adding a pair of blocks. Senior
Rhyenne Filisi had a good day as well with seven kills and a .778 attack percentage. Junior
Payton Morman paced the Rockets' offensive attack with 27 assists while contributing three blocks on the defensive end.
Next up for Toledo is a weekend tournament at Western Kentucky next weekend. The Rockets will also face Northern Kentucky and Austin Peay.
1st set (25-12, Toledo)
Both teams traded points early, but it didn't take long for Toledo to assert itself on Saturday. With the score tied at 3-3, the Rockets used a 12-3 run to take a commanding 15-6 lead. UT's lead grew to as many as 13 points, and it would win the first set by the same margin. Toledo hit a staggering .538 (16-2-26) in the opening frame, while Bouyer and Filisi combined to hit .750 (9-0-12) and collect five and four kills, respectively.
2nd set (25-14, Toledo)
The Rockets' dominance continued in the second set as they jumped out to an 11-3 lead and didn't look back. The UT lead grew to 12, 20-8, after a 4-0 run that was capped by a kill from junior
Abby Erickson. Toledo would end up winning 25-14 to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Bouyer was a perfect 4-for-4 on attack attempts in the second set while junior
Taylor Alt registered four terminations as well.
3rd Set (25-21, Toledo)
In the closest set of the afternoon in terms of margin of victory, Morehead State held its latest lead of the match when it grabbed a 9-8 advantage. The Rockets weren't down for long, scoring five straight points to go up 13-9 and take the lead for good. The Eagles came within two points late, 22-20, but Toledo held on to complete the three-set sweep and end its weekend with a win.
