BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Toledo baseball team split its doubleheader at Bowling Green on Saturday, winning game one by a score of 6-1 before dropping the second game, 7-6.
With their win in the first game, the Rockets (27-18, 18-12 MAC) set a new program record with their 12
th consecutive win. The 12-game winning streak is the longest in school history, topping the 11-game winning streak by the 2011 squad.
"We played really good baseball in game one," head coach
Rob Reinstetle said. "
Kyle Jones had another dominant start and
Cal McAninch was good in relief. The offense executed and did a great job, despite some tough wind conditions today. Game two just didn't go our way. Bowling Green put a big inning together and that was the difference, but we battled like we always do and had a chance to tie it in the top of the ninth. I told the team after the game I was proud of them. To set a school record with 12 straight wins is a great accomplishment. Nothing changes, we're still playing great baseball as a group. We turn the page on today and start a new streak tomorrow."
The Rockets took a lead in game one before the Falcons had a chance to bat, and they would not relinquish their advantage the entire game. Jones was terrific, throwing six innings and striking out six while allowing just one run and walking none. McAninch tossed a scoreless bottom of the seventh to seal the deal.
At the plate, six different Rockets drove in runs, and a pair of freshmen registered two-hit days.
Garret Pike and
Brian Fry both went 2-for-4 at the plate and both tallied RBIs. Junior
Mason Sykes also slugged his 12
th home run of the season.
Toledo got off to another hot start in game two, scoring three runs in the top of the first. But a six-run fourth inning by Bowling Green proved to be the difference in the one-run loss. The Rockets nearly came back with two runs in the top of the ninth, but stranded the tying run on second base to end the game.
Fry had another two-hit performance in the second game and was joined by senior
John Servello and redshirt freshman
Trey Wright, who both had two hits in the second game.

How it Happened (Game 2)
- Toledo got off to a good start in game two, scoring three runs in the top of the first. Pike drove in two with a double into the gap in left-center field, then Sykes made it 3-0 with a sac fly.
- Bowling Green took control with a six-run bottom of the fourth to take a 6-3 lead. Adam Furnas provided the big swing for the Falcons in the form of a three-run home run to tie the game. An RBI single and a two-run double followed and put the Rockets in a three-run hole.
- BGSU extended its lead to four with another run in the bottom of the sixth, putting the score at 7-3.
- Toledo trimmed the deficit to three, 7-4, with a run in the top of the seventh.
- The Rockets put together a rally in the top of the ninth and nearly tied the game. Junior Darryn Davis led off the inning by being hit by a pitch and senior Nicky Winterstein followed that up with a walk to put two runners on. Both would come around to score, Davis on a base hit and Winterstein on a wild pitch, to put Toledo within a run at 7-6. The Falcons would retire the next three batters, however, to escape with a one-run victory.
