Toledo Bounces Back with 5-1 Win over Ball State

TOLEDO, Ohio – Toledo's trio of sophomore Camryn Szynski, junior Cal McAninch, and sophomore Kyle Pijaszek held Ball State to one run on five hits in Sunday's 5-1 win at Scott Park.

After dropping the first three games of the series, the Rockets bounced back on Sunday to end the weekend on a high note. The Cardinals had scored 21 runs in the previous three games, but they were stymied by Toledo's pitching in the series finale.

"I'm really proud of the team and the way they came out and played today," head coach Rob Reinstetle said. "It salvaged the weekend and keeps us right in the thick of the MAC standings. Camryn Szynski was exactly what the doctor ordered with his excellent start on the mound, and both Cal McAninch and Kyle Pijaszek threw well in relief. We played great defense all around as well; we turned some nice double plays and had some nice diving catches in the outfield by Scott Mackiewicz and John Servello. The offense was very timely today. Darryn Davis got us on the board early with his home run, and after that we manufactured some runs to seal the deal.

"I told the team, when we play like we did today, we can beat anyone on our schedule. The key for us is to find a way to be consistent with it and play like this every game."

Szynski made his first start of the season on Sunday, striking out four in six innings. McAninch tossed a scoreless seventh inning, then Pijaszek closed the door with two shutout innings to end the game.

At the plate, junior Darryn Davis went 2-for-2 with a two-run home run and a pair of walks. Sophomore Scott Mackiewicz went 2-for-4 with a double, while senior John Servello and junior Mason Sykes both drove in runs on Sunday. Sykes also stole two bases. Sophomore Jeron Williams scored twice hitting out of the leadoff spot.

The Rockets hit the road next weekend for a four-game series at Ohio.

How it Happened
  • David gave Toledo its first lead of the weekend with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first. Williams reached on a base hit then came around to score on Davis' homer.
  • Ball State scored a run in the top of the third to make it a 2-1 game. The first three batters of the inning reached base and the fourth drove in a run on a sac fly. With one out and runners on first and second, Szynski induced a 6-4-3 double play to get out of trouble.
  • The Rockets extended their lead with three runs in the bottom half of the third. Williams scored on a throwing error by the pitcher, then Davis scored on a double by Servello. A sac fly off the bat of Sykes brought in the third run of the inning and put the score at 5-1. Neither team would score another run the rest of the game.
  • Szynski did not allow a hit in his final three innings of work and tossed a 1-2-3 frame in his final bit of action in the top of the sixth.
  • The bullpen closed out the game with three scoreless frames to seal the win. McAninch threw a scoreless top of the seventh and Pijaszek shut down the Cardinals in the eighth and ninth.
