MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Toledo softball team closed out its mid-week series against Central Michigan with a doubleheader loss on Wednesday afternoon. The Chippewas posted a 10-2 run-rule victory in the opener and rallied to win the nightcap 6-3.
Senior
Aubrey Reed cranked out three hits, including her fifth homer of the season, and an RBI to lead the Rockets in the doubleheader. Sophomore
Jenna Kroll had two hits, including her sixth home run of the season, and two RBIs.
CMU's Kaitlyn Bean earned the win in Game One by allowing only two runs in seven hits. Grace Lehto picked up the win for Game Two allowing three runs on five hits in a complete-game performance.
Toledo and Central Michigan were tied 1-1 through the first two innings until the Chippewas pulled away. The Chippewas scored two runs in the third and five in the fourth. CMU closed out the scoring with single runs in the fifth and sixth.
Reed got Toledo' offense rolling in the second game with a leadoff homer and senior
Aleah Marra's sacrifice fly put the Rockets up 2-0.
Kroll brought around one more run in the third before Central Michigan answered with three runs in the fourth to tie the game 3-3. The Chippewas tied the game in the fourth and added three more runs in the fifth and sixth to register a 6-3 win and sweep the series.
Toledo will be back home at Scott Park this Saturday and Sunday, April 23-24 for a three-game series vs. Kent State.
HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1 – Central Michigan 10, Toledo 2
- Freshman Sidney Griffith doubled to lead off the second and came around to score the game's first run.
- Central Michigan's Kelsey Alexander tied the game 1-1 with a leadoff home run on the first pitch in the bottom of the second.
- The Chippewas added two runs in the third on an error and an RBI single.
- In the top of the fourth, sophomore Jenna Kroll hit a leadoff homer to bring the Rockets within 3-2.
- CMU answered with five runs in the fourth, highlighted by Skylar Coberley's three-run dinger.
- The Chippewas ended the game with single runs in the fifth and sixth.
GAME 2 – Central Michigan 6, Toledo 3
- Senior Aubrey Reed hit a line drive over the left-field wall and Aleah Marra's added a sacrifice fly to give Toledo an early 2-0 lead in the second.
- Kroll's RBI single to left-center put Toledo ahead, 3-0, in the third.
- Central Michigan tied the game 3-3 with three runs in the fourth on a pair of RBI doubles and an error. Â
- The Chippewas took the lead with two runs in the fifth and closed out the scoring in the sixth on an RBI double by Abbey Tolmie.
