Toledo Drops Both Ends of Doubleheader to Bowling Green

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Toledo softball team lost a pair of contests to I-75 rival Bowling Green on Saturday at Meserve Field. The Rockets (8-20, 1-6 MAC) were shut out 6-0 in the opening game, and fell by a score of 5-3 in the finale.

Toledo was unable to get anything going at the plate in game one, with senior Dayna Denner collecting the lone UT hit. Sophomore Jenna Kroll's sixth-inning walk made her the only other Rocket to reach base in the first contest.

In the series finale, Toledo struck first with a three-run top of the third. Freshman Sidney Griffith led off the inning with a double and later scored on senior Anna Dixon's hit a sacrifice fly.  Sophomore Lexi Eckman scored off a BGSU throwing error and Denner's RBI double made it a 3-0 ballgame. Those would be the only runs of the afternoon for the Rockets, however, which allowed Bowling Green to chip away at the deficit until a two-run bottom of the sixth gave the Falcons the lead for good.

Toledo returns home this week to host Miami for a three-game series at Scott Park. The Rockets and RedHawks will open their series with a single game on Tuesday, April 5 and wrap up with a doubleheader on Wednesday beginning at 1:00 p.m. All three games will be televised locally on BCSN and streamed live on ESPN+.

How it Happened
Game 1 – Bowling Green 6, Toledo 0
  • Bowling Green's Greta L'Esperance led off the game with an inside-the-park home run, which highlighted a two-run bottom of the first that gave BGSU an early 2-0 lead.
  • Sydney McKeever reached first on a throwing error, stole second, but was unable to advance home in the top of the third.
  • McKeever reached base and stole second in the top of the fifth as well, but once again was left stranded on second base to end the inning.
  • The Falcons increased their lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the fifth. With the bases loaded, Madison Hendrix brought all three runners home with a double into center field.
  • Denner registered the first Rocket hit of the game in the top of the sixth with a two-out single. Kroll walked to put runners on first and second, but neither runner advanced any further.
  • An RBI triple in the bottom of the sixth gave BGSU a 6-0 lead, which would hold as the final score.
GAME 2 – Bowling Green 5, Toledo 3
  • The Rockets' three-run top of the third gave them a 3-0 lead in game two. Griffith led off the inning with a double into the gap in left-center field and later scored on Dixon's sac fly. Eckman scored on a BGSU error, and McKeever came around to score on Denner's two-out double down the line in right field.
  • Bowling Green quickly answered with a two-run double in the bottom of the third.
  • A UT throwing error in the bottom of the fifth allowed the tying run to score and make it a 3-3 game.
  • The Falcons took the lead in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of two-out RBI singles, making the score 5-3.
  • Eckman and Dixon both reached on base hits in the top of the seventh to give the Rockets a chance, but the late rally would not produce any runs.
