TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo men's tennis team was defeated in the closest match of the season to Western Michigan Sunday afternoon at the UT Varsity Tennis Courts, 4-3.
UT came out hot in doubles competition with help from No. 1 doubles Pawit Sornlaksup and Marko Galic and No. 3 doubles Adam Kovac and Luka Jankovic to capture the doubles point.
Galic defeated Borgan Pierce, 6-3, 6-1 avenging a loss to his WMU counterpart earlier this season on March 13. The Broncos then tied the match at 2-2 after winning the No. 4 and No. 5 courts. Sornlaksup stood his ground at the No. 1 singles court, defeating Anton Arzhankin to mark his 18th-straight singles victory and remain undefeated against conference opponents. The final two singles courts were won by WMU in three close sets to win the match and take first place in the conference standings.
"This is pretty painful today," head coach Al Wermer said, "but these guys will bounce back even better. That's the DNA we have."
Toledo (13-7, 6-2) will close out the regular season in New York next weekend when it visits Buffalo (April 15) and Binghamton (April 17). Friday's match is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. and  Sunday's match is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
