Toledo Takes Down Ohio State, 7-6

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Freshman Caden Konczak's first career home run in the top of the sixth inning was the fifth of the night for the Toledo baseball team and proved to be the game-winner in the Rockets' 7-6 win over Ohio State in Columbus on Wednesday.

The win is Toledo's first over the Buckeyes since April 12, 1983 and the first over a Big Ten team since March 19, 2017 at Illinois.

"I'm so proud of these guys," head coach Rob Reinstetle said. "They came in and played really good baseball. So many guys had a hand in tonight's win. We had a great night offensively. Our five home runs really propelled us. Cal McAninch and Cam Szynski were outstanding at the end of the game out of the bullpen. Now we have a huge MAC series against Ball State this weekend at home. I hope we can use this as positive energy and carry the momentum into Friday. But I'm just so proud of the guys today."

Trailing 6-3 in the top of the sixth, the Rockets scored four runs on three homers to take a 7-6 lead they would not relinquish. Sophomore Scott Mackiewicz and freshman Garret Pike slugged back-to-back home runs to tie the game at 6-6, then freshman Caden Konczak smacked a 2-0 pitch down the right field line that cleared the fence and put Toledo up by a run. It was second game of Konczak's career and his first collegiate hit.

Toledo tallied a total of five home runs on the night, scoring all seven of its runs on the long ball. Junior Darryn Davis and senior John Servello also left the yard for the Midnight Blue and Gold, hitting home runs in the third and fourth inning, respectively.

Six pitchers saw time on the mound for the Rockets on Wednesday. Freshman Brennan McCune threw two scoreless innings and earned the win, while sophomore Parker Newby, junior Cal McAninch, and sophomore Camryn Szynski all turned in scoreless outings as well. McAninch struck out two in two shutout innings, while Szynski earned his second save of the season with a scoreless bottom of the ninth.

Next up for Toledo is a four-game home series against Ball State this weekend.

How it Happened
  • Ohio State struck first with a pair of solo home runs in the bottom of the first inning.
  • The Buckeyes added another run with a sac fly in the bottom of the third to make it 3-0.
  • Davis put Toledo on the board with a two-run home run in the top of the third to make it 3-2. Junior Marcus Strother opened the inning with a single, then two batters later Davis crushed the first pitch he saw over the fence in right field.
  • Servello tied it up at 3-3 with solo blast in the top of the fourth inning.
  • The tie didn't last long as Ohio State scored three in the bottom half of the fourth to put the score at 6-3.
  • The Rockets slugged their way back into the lead in the top of the sixth. Mackiewicz and Pike blasted back-to-back home runs to tie the game at 6-6, then Konczak gave Toledo the lead with a solo shot to right field.
  • McAninch tossed two scoreless innings out of the bullpen, keeping the Buckeyes at bay in the seventh and eighth.
  • Szynski pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth to seal the deal.
