CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Toledo men's tennis team closed out its non-conference schedule by splitting a pair of matches in Cleveland on Thursday afternoon. The Rockets opened the day with a 4-3 defeat to Cleveland State before rebounding with a 7-0 sweep over Holy Cross.
In the morning match, Cleveland State took an early lead by earning the doubles point. Marko Galic and Pawit Sornlaksup defended the No. 1 court for the Rockets, but the Vikings had two 6-4 victories on the No. 2 and No. 3 courts. In singles actions, Galic and Luka Jankovic won their respective courts in two sets, and Sornlaksup tied the match 3-3 with a two-set win on the No. 1 court. The deciding match point was a three-set win for Mikael Erler over Adam Kovac on the No. 2 court, snapping the Rockets' five match win streak.
In the afternoon, Toledo blanked Holy Cross College 7-0. The Rockets won the top three courts in three-set tiebreaks, and swept the bottom three courts in two sets each.
"It was not an easy day," head coach Al Wermer said. "We were a little bit disappointed versus Cleveland State. They finished that match far better than we did. Holy Cross then gave us a nice challenge and forced us into some three-setters, which make us tougher."
Sornlaksup went 2-0 in singles competition to increase his winning streak to 10 matches on the no. 1 court. Sornlaksup and Galic went 2-0 on the No.1 doubles court and are on a four-match win streak.
The Rockets will open Mid-American Conference play with two road matches, beginning with a match vs. Northern Illinois on Friday, March 11 in Des Plaines, Ill.
