Toledo Heads to Ohio State for Midweek Contest

3/29/2022 3:32:00 PM

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo baseball team will head down to Columbus on Wednesday evening to face Ohio State at 6:05 p.m. in non-conference action. The midweek contest will be streamed live on BTN+.

Toledo (11-11) has won four of its last five games entering Wednesday's action, while OSU (8-12) has dropped three of its last four.

Following Wednesday's game at Ohio State, Toledo will return home to host first-place Ball State for four games at Scott Park this weekend.

Last Time Out

Toledo played three of its four schedule games at home against Miami this past weekend, with Sunday's game being postponed due to weather.

The Rockets captured both games of Friday's doubleheader, winning 8-7 in 12 innings in the first game before capturing a 3-2 victory in game two.

The highlight of the day was junior Darryn Davis' electrifying walk-off home run to end game one. With two outs in the bottom of the 12th inning and the Rockets trailing 7-6, Davis launched a two-run home run to right field to stun Miami and claim a marathon 8-7 victory.

Sophomore Kyle Jones proved to be the hero in game two, striking out a career-high 13 in Toledo's 3-2 win. After giving up a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning that made it a one-run ballgame, Jones struck out Miami's final two batters to shut the door.

Saturday's game also went 12 innings, with the RedHawks coming out on top 14-13.

Rocket Notes
  • Weather has wreaked havoc on the early part of Toledo's conference schedule. Through three MAC weekends, the Rockets have played three doubleheaders, one single game, and had a game postponed.
  • Prior to Darryn Davis' two-run, walk-off home run in Friday's win over Miami, the last time Toledo walked off an opponent was Quinnipiac on March 15, 2019. Davis also had the game-winning hit in that game.
  • Through the first six weeks of the season, the Rockets have sported one of the best pitching staffs in the conference. They lead the MAC in ERA (4.43) and rank third in both strikeouts (182) and batting average against (.266).
  • Kyle Jones has been a driving force behind Toledo's strong pitching, leading the MAC in both strikeouts (51) and innings pitched (38.0) while sitting third in ERA (2.61). Jones has thrown at least six innings in all six outings this season.
  • Dating back to last season, nine of Jones' last 10 starts have gone at least six innings.
  • Mason Sykes is tied with Ball State's Trenton Quartermaine and Eastern Michigan's Gabe Denton for most home runs in the MAC this year with seven. Sykes hit seven homers all of last season.
  • John Servello is hitting .361 in conference play and is tied for the team lead with five stolen bases.
  • Freshman Garret Pike has reached base in nine straight games, the longest such streak by a Rocket this season. He broke out in a big way in Saturday's contest, hitting two home runs and driving in three runs.

On the mound, Wednesday's probably starter Wyatt Loncar has struck out 28 in 18.2 innings and owns a 5.79 ERA.
