TOLEDO, Ohio – Juniors Kyle Jones and Mason Sykes of the Toledo baseball team both earned weekly awards from the Mid-American Conference on Monday.
Jones was named Co-Pitcher of the Week and Sykes was named Co-Player of the Week.
For the second straight week, Jones turned in a terrific pitching performance to help Toledo open a weekend series with a victory. On Friday at High Point, Jones tossed seven shutout innings while striking out nine to help lead Toledo to an 8-1 win. He allowed a two-out single in the bottom of the second inning, but proceeded to retire 16 straight batters before leaving the game following the bottom of the seventh. Jones has been outstanding these first two weeks, posting a 2.08 ERA in 13.0 innings while striking out 19 and walking just one. He ranks first among MAC pitchers in strikeouts and innings pitched this year and is the only MAC pitcher with two wins so far this season.
Sykes helped lead a Toledo offense that won three out of four games at High Point. Sykes hit .471 this past weekend and slugged .647, driving in six runs in three games against the Panthers. Sykes had a hit in all four games at High Point. In the opener on Friday, he drove in two runs in Toledo's 8-1 win. He saved his best for last, going 4-for-6 at the plate on Sunday with a home run, four RBI, and two runs scored. Sykes is tied for second in the MAC in hits (10) and RBI (6) through two weeks.
This is the first MAC weekly award for both players.
Next up for the Rockets is a weekend series at Elon this weekend.
