NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Toledo baseball team dropped both games of its Saturday doubleheader at Belmont, falling by a score of 7-2 in game one before losing 5-0 in game two.
"I'm really disappointed in the games today, especially after playing so well last night to get the win," head coach
Rob Reinstetle said. "We didn't get strong starts on the mound in either game. The lone bright spots were the guys who came out of the bullpen and threw the ball well. Probably my biggest disappointment today was the offense. We were tentative and didn't swing the bats at all like we are capable. The beauty of baseball is we get to play again tomorrow. We have a chance to get out of here 2-2 on the weekend. I told the team this is like a MAC weekend. While we want to always win the series, there is a huge difference in 2-2 vs 1-3. It could be the difference in winning the league or going to the tournament. Bottom line, we need to play well tomorrow and play like we are capable of."
In game one, Belmont scored three runs in the second and three in the fourth to take a commanding 6-1 lead it would not relinquish. The Bruins put up a three-spot in the first inning of the second game and never looked back.
The Rockets' bats managed just six hits on Saturday. Junior
Darryn Davis, redshirt freshman
Trey Wright, and freshman
Garret Pike recorded hits in the first game, and sophomore
Jeron Williams, junior
Kade Wroot, and freshman
Brayden White tallied hits in game two.
Six pitchers saw time on the mound for Toledo on Saturday. Newcomers
CJ Lewis and
Cole Rodriguez combined for three innings of one-run ball in the first game with Lewis notching a pair of strikeouts as well.
Brennan McCune and
Luke Scoles made their Rocket debuts as well, combining to throw four shutout frames in the second game. McCune tossed three scoreless innings while striking out three, and Scoles pitched retired all three batters he faced in the bottom of the sixth inning, striking out two.
The Rockets and Bruins will meet for the final time this weekend on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
