Toledo Breezes Past Western Illinois in Three Sets

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The University of Toledo women's volleyball team started its weekend off with a three-set sweep of Western Illinois on Friday at IUPUI's Hampton Inn Invitational. The victory pushes the Rockets' record to 3-1 this season.

"That was the great team effort and the kind of performance we talked about having all week: stringing together wins and executing our game plan from week to week," said head coach Jason Oliver said. " Our serve and pass was great, and we forced Western Illinois into some bad situations. We need to get that same type of effort tomorrow."

Toledo won the first two sets without much trouble to take a 2-0 lead in the match, then dominated in the third set to finish off the Leathernecks. The Rockets hit .524 in the final set and ended up winning 25-8, the largest margin of victory in a set for Toledo since the NCAA switched to 25-point sets in 2008. The Rockets did not trail at any point in the second or third sets.

Junior Liz Beasley led Toledo with eight ills and hit .400 on Friday, while Sina Uluave contributed seven terminations. Sophomore Payton Morman (14) and freshman Elaine Redman (13) both registered double-digit assist totals, and junior Ryann Jaqua led all comers with 14 digs.

Next up for Toledo is a pair of matches on Saturday against Chattanooga and IUPUI. The contest against the Mocs is set to begin at 10:00 a.m. and the battle with the Jaguars will start at 6:00 p.m.

Set 1 (25-15, Toledo)

Western Illinois scored the first three points of the match and led 5-3 at one juncture, but its lead wouldn't last long. Toledo scored the next five points to take an 8-5 lead and did not trail for the remainder of the match. The Rockets already held a five-point lead, 20-15, when they scored the final five points of the set to claim a double-digit victory in the first frame to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Uluave scored two of the final five points and Morman contributed a service ace to help wrap things up in the first set.

Set 2 (25-18, Toledo)

The Rockets kept rolling to start the second set, scoring six of the first seven points. The Leathernecks fought to within a point, 10-9, but wouldn't get any closer. Toledo rattled off seven of the next eight points to take a 17-10 lead. Western Illinois cut the UT lead to three, 21-18, but the next four points went the way of the Rockets to give them a 2-0 lead in the match. Beasley contributed four of her eight kills in the second frame.

Set 3 (25-8, Toledo)

The third set of Friday's match was the most dominant by a Toledo team in some time. Leading 7-5, the Rockets strung together a 14-1 run to take an overwhelming 21-6 lead over the Leathernecks. Beasley started off the run with two straight kills and sophomore Rachel Pierce followed with back-to-back terminations of her own. Four unforced errors for WIU contributed to its woes, and Redman provided the exclamation point with a service ace to put her team ahead by 15. Western Illinois managed two more points, but the Rockets scored the final four of the match to open their weekend with an emphatic three-set victory.
