TOLEDO, Ohio – The University of Toledo baseball team (23-31, 21-17 MAC) dropped both games of its doubleheader against Central Michigan (38-16, 29-9 MAC) at Mercy Field on Saturday. CMU won the first game 1-0 before taking game two by a score of 9-0.
Game one was the definition of a pitcher's duel, with both teams combining for just the one run on four hits in eight innings.
Kyle Jones started on the mound for Toledo and threw eight innings, tying his career-high, and struck out three while allowing just five baserunners. CMU's Andrew Taylor tossed an eight-inning shutout, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out 10.
Marcus Strother had the lone hit for Toledo, a fifth-inning double.
Game two was a different story for the Chippewas, who scored nine runs to complete the doubleheader sweep.
John Servello had both of Toledo's hits in the second game, with Central Michigan's Garrett Navarra throwing 6.2 shutout frames while striking out nine.
The Rocket wrap up their season with a doubleheader against CMU on Sunday at Scott Park that begins at Noon. The first game of that twin bill will be seven innings and the second game will be a full nine-inning contest. Should the first game go into extra innings, the second game will be altered to a seven-inning game. Both games will be televised locally on BCSN and available for streaming on ESPN3.
Toledo will honor three seniors prior to the first game:
Nate Haugh,
Wyatt Jefferson, and
Layne Schnitz-Paxton.
How it Happened (Game 1)
- The first game was hitless through five innings, as both Jones and Taylor were dominating hitters all afternoon.
- Central Michigan got its first hit with one out in the top of the sixth on a single from Mario Camilletti. He would reach second base on a passed ball, but Jones worked his way out of the inning the keep the game scoreless.
- Strother doubled to right field with one out in the bottom of the sixth to get the Rockets in the hit column. He advanced to third base on the ensuing groundout, putting a Toledo runner 90 feet away from the first run of the game, but the inning ended with Strother still on third to keep the game at 0-0.
- The first game was scheduled to go seven innings but that would prove to be not enough, as the deciding run crossed the plate in the top of the eighth.
- CMU scored the first run of the game with two outs in the eighth to take a 1-0 lead. With a runner on second base, Camilletti singled through the right side of the infield to bring him home and drive in the winning run.
How it Happened (Game 2)
- Due to the first game going into extra innings, game two was shortened from nine innings to seven.
- Central Michigan had runners on second and third in the top of the first, but Connor Brandon notched a clutch strikeout to escape unscathed.
- The Rockets weren't as lucky in the top of the second, as CMU scored six runs and batted around to take a commanding early lead.
- The Chippewas scored another run in the top of the fifth on an RBI double to push their lead to 7-0.
- Two more CMU runs crossed the plate in the top of the sixth to make it 9-0.
- Navarra flummoxed Toledo batters all game, allowing just two hits in a near-complete game. Servello singled in the fourth and seventh innings, but those were the only two times a Rocket baserunner reached base in game two.
