DEKALB, Ill. – The University of Toledo baseball team (23-29, 21-15 MAC) clinched its weekend series at Northern Illinois (15-35, 14-22 MAC) on Sunday, winning 4-1 to take three out of four against the Huskies.
"We got another series win today, which is just awesome," head coach
Rob Reinstetle said. "Today we did it on the mound.
Connor Brandon pitched well at the start and
Wyatt Jefferson was superb the rest of the game. We never got the big hit to blow it open but did enough to win. I'm just really proud of the guys for going on the road and winning the series."
Brandon and Jefferson combined to allow just one run on two hits on Sunday. Brandon started the game and struck out two in 3.1 innings of work, and Jefferson pitched the final 5.2 innings. The senior did now allow a hit and struck out three to earn his third victory of the season.
Darryn Davis tallied two RBIs at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a walk.
Matt Kirk was 3-for-4 at the plate, getting his second straight start in right field.
Nicky Winterstein capped a strong weekend by reaching base twice and driving in a run to help the Rockets win the series.
Toledo wraps up the regular season with a four-game series against Central Michigan at Scott Park next weekend.
