TOLEDO, Ohio – The University of Toledo women's tennis team welcomed Western Michigan on Friday and defeated the Broncos, 4-3, in thrilling fashion.
The Rockets' win over WMU was just the fourth in program history.
"We had some really impressive singles performances from Julia [Kuszynski] and Cassie [Alcala], who closed their matches right away which is helpful to the team," head coach Tracy Mauntler said. "I'm so proud of the way Patty [Panta] played down the stretch during those big moments to clinch the match for us. It was a great team effort and I love to watch these girls play for each other every time they step on the court."
Freshman Cassie Alcala and sophomore Sloane Teske started things off with a 6-1 win in doubles play to put the Rockets in a good position to win the point. WMU won a close match on the No. 2 court, and it all came down to a pair of freshmen on the No. 3 court for UT: Julia Kuszynski and Ava McQuillin. The rookie duo outlasted their Western Michigan counterparts in a long battle to clinch the doubles point for Toledo.
The Broncos quickly tied things up at 1-1 with a win on the No. 2 singles court, but Alcala put the Rockets ahead once again with a victory on the top court. Kuszynski was victorious on the No. 3 court to put Toledo within a point of winning, 3-1, but Western Michigan did not go down easy. The Broncos won on the No. 4 court and took a long match on the No. 6 court to tie the match at 3-3. Senior Patricia Panta stood tall on the No. 5 court, winning a long first set and overcoming a second-set loss to win the third and final set, 6-4, to clinch the match for Toledo.
The Rockets host Eastern Michigan on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. outside at the UT Varsity Tennis Courts.
